1. I had another work from home day. I'm about halfway caught up with my email and fully caught up with teams. Tomorrow I've got a couple meetings, so I've got to go in to the office, but I might work from home again on Thursday to finally catch up on everything.

2. When Carla was out today she stopped at Uncle Tetsu's, a Japanese cheesecake chain. They have a sakura cheesecake right now and we had some after dinner tonight and it was sooooooo good. I normally prefer New York style cheesecake to the Japanese fluffier style, but this was really good consistency and the sakura flavor was amazing.

3. I finished playing The Plucky Squire. Overall it's a pretty fun game, but it is not just a straight action adventure game. There are a bunch of (frankly not that fun) mini games for the boss fights and stuff where you have to play other styles of games and that is not what I signed up for. Like for one character's boss battles you play a Mike Tyson style boxing game, for another it's a rhythm game, and for the third it's a Puzzle Bobble type. Then there are some stealth sequences where you have to sneak past enemies who can kill you instantly if they sense you, and if they sense you there is no way to run to escape, even if you're close to a place you could get away. You're just instantly dead. And the final battle is a space shooter type. The good thing is that if you die in a boss battle you can sometimes restart partway through, not all the way at the beginning, and the stealth sequences have multiple checkpoints and you'll respawn there rather than back at the beginning. But I would still have preferred not to have that "variety" in my action adventure game. Still is a fun game, though. But if you suck at those types of games it might ruin it for you.

4. I finished editing all my Disney Japan pics, so hopefully I can get the last day's posts written up later this week.

5. Jasper is just so handsome.

When I last left off, we had just checked out the big gift shop at the Fantasy Springs hotel and were exploring the land while waiting for our return time for the Peter Pan ride.

More DisneySea adventures! )

Inugami appeared in a hilarious way in chapter 3! Chouji calls him Wan-chan lmao. He's a puppy but he's trying to communicate through meows with an ally cat. Aw, Inugami's upset that Sako left Shishitouren...

It kinda sucks right now that attributes are so important but it's hard to make a full balanced team with so few characters out. The SSR versions are barred behind a low draw rate so you have to make due with one or two SSRs, some S's and the rest A's to split across attribute teams. I have one full same-attribute team but it's not balanced right, I think it's missing a striker and has 2 supporters, plus multiple A's.

Did Inugami tackle Sako?? 🤣 Oh, he though he was trying to kill himself by jumping......

This game made me realize Tsugeura speaks in Kansai-ben, guess I didn't pay attention when I watched the anime.

So Chouji challenged Umemiya, Wanijima challenged Chouji/Togame, then Inugami challenged Sako (who challenged Hiiragi), then Sako told Chouji to challenge him...oh Shishitouren.

It must've been really hard for Kanuma to leave Arima to do what Wanijima asked of him. Man, this group is so dumb, they should've done their research before attacking Shishitouren. 😅 To be fair the big brother didn't know until last minute so the younger brother is the one making him look stupid.

First time seeing Chouji look like that and getting excited! YEAH show Kraken their mistakes!!!

Wow, I got x2 of the highest ranking film rolls, 1 highest ranking notebook and 8k of the green coins for ranking in PVP!

I ended up buying the special pass to support the game and because I'm greedy and want more stuff haha.

I tried to pull for the new event Kaji but got SSR Hiiragi (which is fine), I'll just keep trying.

The chat with Kiryuu about crane games when Sakura compliments him is cute, almost made me ship it. <3 I guess I kinda of already do, in a polyam way? And the chat about games reaching end of service is too relatable. T__T

Oh, I reached the level cap at 38. :O So that's what the yellow coin shop is for... Looks like you get them in place of exp for mission rewards etc, wonder how long it'll take to get 10k.

The chat with Kaji about how the movie he borrowed from Enomoto on the rainy day wasn't as funny as usual because he had no one to watch it with. And encouraging Sakura to spend time after school with his classmates. And you can choose to have Sakura say "I-I'll...try...inviting them." :') Ugh Kaji is a great mentor.

The biggest pain about this game is matching the scene cards to the characters, some are character exclusive, some are attribute exclusive and some are card exclusive. Sometimes I'm gonna need to really sit down and save my parties. I didn't have enough to form full balanced parties before but I might now. And I need to level up more A and S scene cards to make up for some of my SSR scene cards being so exclusive... (You still get some stats if you mismatch a card but I don't know if it's worth it??)

Trumpist posting about “350K missing children at the border.” I don’t think I should engage with this one, but I’m curious about the math here. How many children are they defining as “at the border”? If 350K are missing, are any of them left?

I understand that the reason that V5 did what it did with the Giovanni---> Hecata thing was to rectify the whole "if you want to be a necromancer, the easiest way to do that is to be a member of the Evil Corpsefucking Incest Mafia Vampire Clan" thing, which as a person with a brain and knowledge of Game Design can get behind, at least hypothetically.

As a weirdo on the Internet, however...

When 2020 was looming, I posted an entry about the media that had made a real impact on me in the 2010s. I had fun with this, but it's hard to narrow things down across an entire decade! Maybe I should start doing these media roundups more frequently? Every half-decade, perhaps?

Oh, hey, it's 2025.

In alphabetical order, here are ten canons from the last five years that I think I'm going to remember! Note that this is media I originally experienced between 2020 and 2024, rather than necessarily being media that was originally released in that period.

1. Celeste. One of my absolute favourite games. Great music, charming characters, satisfying gameplay. It's tough, but I rarely found it frustrating, and I was delighted to realise how much I'd improved when I went back to replay from the beginning. Playing Celeste is a lot like playing the piano, learning the right pattern and timing of button presses through repetition until you can run smoothly through a level. I'll often find myself replaying Celeste levels when I've got a little time and nothing else is grabbing me, in the same way I'll often take a moment to sit at the piano and play a few pieces I know by heart.

2. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. The relationship between these siblings is just so awful and intimate and fascinating; I can't get enough of it. I want to swim around in all this hideous codependency. When I first drafted this list at the start of the year, I noted, There's a chance I'm being too hasty with this one; I discovered it right before 2024 ended, so I haven't had time to be sure it's going to be a lasting interest. But, having had my mind obliterated by the latest chapter, I can now say with confidence that I am never going to stop thinking about this horrible game.

3. Lost. What an experience! I love it when characters are stranded together and forced to bond under high pressure, and this is an absolutely stellar example. Went in some wild directions, too; I said 'what the fuck' so many times while watching this show. Jack Shephard is a wreck of a man in a way that I find fascinating.

4. Omori. This game fucked me up. A lot of it is fun and charming! And then there are the parts that severely messed with my head. Two separate aspects gave me trouble sleeping. Some really interesting uses of gameplay, including one of the best-executed plot reveals I've ever seen.

5. Person of Interest. In a lot of case-of-the-week shows, the case itself is the least interesting part for me. In Person of Interest, I found the individual weekly cases absolutely gripping. The fact that the murders they're investigating haven't happened yet gives each case a living main character, usually the would-be victim, which makes them so much more fun to watch. I really enjoy Reese as a character, too.

6. Persona 5. I picked up Persona 5 in lockdown, when it was heavily discounted. I'd heard good things about the Persona series, but I'd always been intimidated by how long and complicated the games sounded. Still, it was 2020, and I wasn't able to leave the house, so it seemed like the right time for a hundred-hour RPG. It was an incredible decision. What a stylish, fun game! What great kids! I played it non-stop for a month and a half and had an absolute blast.

7. Persona 4. I was a little concerned about going back to Persona 4 after playing 5. I'd loved Persona 5 so much; what if the previous game was a disappointment? But I ended up loving Persona 4 just as passionately, largely because of Yosuke; he's a good-hearted but slightly shitty disaster of a teenage boy who's helplessly in love with the protagonist, and I find him endlessly endearing.

8. Severance. I've always been compelled by stories about weird things happening to people's memories, and by stories about people developing intense relationships while isolated together, so Severance is essentially the perfect canon for me. By a long way, it's the most gripping show I've ever watched. I'm so nervous when I sit down for a new episode; I never know what to expect!

9. Taskmaster. What a show. It makes me laugh like nothing else. The way it keeps a single set of contestants for each series adds a lot to the experience; you really get to know the contestants and their approaches to these ridiculous tasks over the course of a series. The New Zealand and Australian versions are just as great to watch; Greg Davies remains an unparalleled Taskmaster, but, if I'm honest, Paul Williams is my favourite assistant.

Wait, that's only nine! Okay, I'm going to add a tenth, but this is definitely cheating:

10. Death Note. I absolutely did not first experience Death Note between 2020 and 2024; I've enjoyed it since 2008! But I feel it sort of fits in my 'canons of the last five years' post because I got back into it in 2023 in a way I'd never been into it before. I watched the stage musical, absolutely lost my mind and spent months thinking about nothing but Light Yagami. Let's say the tenth canon here is Death Note: The Musical.

Honourable mention to The Quarry for the burst of intense ficwriting it inspired in me! I wasn't that drawn in by the canon itself, but the potential in Travis and Laura's relationship really grabbed me by the throat.

EDIT: WAIT, I just thought of a legitimate number ten!

10-2: Die Hard. We were locked down for Christmas in 2020, and I was sorry that I couldn't visit my family, but the upside was that I joined in my housemates' Christmas tradition of watching Die Hard. This film was such a delightful surprise for me! I went in expecting a badass, stoic action hero; I got a desperate, terrified mess. I found John McClane's suffering so compelling. What a blast.

I have the ability to summarize good stories in a way that makes them sound like shit. My latest demonstration:

“Necroepilogos is about a group of women and girls who wake up as zombies in a burned-out wasteland with nothing to eat but other zombies. It’s much more idealistic than it initially looks, and apparently it’s going Communist now?”

Spoilers ⬇️

Chapter 6: So Leona's lines at the end of the last chapter were connected to how Scar in The Lion King wasn't a good king, no matter how much you want it or think you deserve it because of lineage, if you can't keep your people alive and happy there's no point in sitting on the throne.

The idea of Jack crouching down a few feet to scare them like this is too funny. And then he had a total tsundere moment. 😂

Cute!!! I always want to screenshot everything in this manga, I'm being fed so well since we don't get to see things like this in the game because of the game style.

Chapter 7: Oh, there are bunny-eared people too?

Man, it's so silly to think Malleus and Lilia would have let themselves be stampeded. Oh Leona...

The notes for Yuuka! "She can shoulder throw Jack". He had to feel some mad respect when she did that.

1. I worked from home today, getting a fair amount of catching up done. Unfortunately I forgot that I also had to double check all my stores' budgets for next month today so that did take some time away from the email and teams catch-up, but I should be able to focus more on that tomorrow. (Probably will mostly work from home tomorrow, too.)

2. We bought a sweater for Alexander for his birthday and even though his birthday is not until next week, gave it to him yesterday so he could try it on and see if it fit, and it was a little big so we said we'd be happy to go exchange it. I was just thinking to exchange it whenever we next go, but there was availability today and Carla felt like going to Disneyland, so while I had to stay home and focus on my email backlog, she went and exchanged the sweater and had a nice morning at DCA. She managed to find all the rest of the hidden easter eggs there (eventually with some help from an online guide) and took pictures, but I'm just going to include those with our next trip post rather than make a separate one. They had Lightning McQueen and Mater ones which are super cute, though.

3. We bought a stereo for the garage and it arrived today. As all modern stereos do these days, it also has bluetooth capability to connect to your phone, but she mainly wanted it for playing actual CDs. Her current CD rack is overflowing, so we need to get another and then move the CDs out to the garage so she can have them out there with the stereo. Nice thing is, unless you're standing right by the door or window, even with it turned up pretty loud you really can't hear much from outside. Amazing what insulation can do!

4. I love the look on Ollie's face here, but he was even cuter before I turned on the light and came in. It wasn't dark but was dim enough that he was really well camouflaged in the box!

(only partially joking)

I started playing again after some time. I last finished Penacony and started the Wardance ceremony quest. The introductions just happened with Fuming's arbiter-general. I don't like Yunli's attitude but she's not wrong about Yanqing, he has things to work on. Just as she does.

What was with Dan Heng's comment about how he hoped Caelus and Jing Yuan just spent some time together and that's why they're close? What else would the case have been for them acting so chummy??

Oh, meeting Moze and Jiaoqiu!

I love how your only options for describing Yanqing to Lingsha are: Young, Cute, Miniature. I'm surprised he didn't protest.

Oh, a wild Sushang. Why do we have the option to say 'you look so pretty when you're serious' WTF.

The Yanli vs Yanqing thing is annoying, just communicate! Yanqing, learn to take criticism, Yanli, learn to give it in a non-abrasive way. You're proving that you're immature.

I like Feixiao, she's cool. :)

"I'm a healer."

Oo nice bit of Yanqing growth, he realized why he continues to do swordplay despite the fear of losing.

Dan Heng saving and protecting Caelus!

Jiaqiou: I'm a healer, fighting isn't everything
Also Jiaoqiou: *doesn't have a healing ability, is a fire attacker*

How did Hoolay get out of the gate?? What did Hoolay mean his first meal was one of his own.

So Xueyi's body is ingenium but her soul is still the same. How the heck did she get permission for that. Hanya was the most effusive I've ever heard her when Xueyi came back as the cycrane. :')

Hahaha Caelus can tell Moze "you look better when you're silent". Moze: "...Really?". I feel like Caelus has some experience reading silent people's expressions because of Dan Heng.

I wasn't expecting to get to see Jiaoqiu's thoughts, I felt like he had things under control in some way but no, he's calling himself a loser and blaming himself already for not doing anything. :'(

The time jump was kind of weird. Like, Yanqing saying 'I WAS planning on showing them the Skysplitter' but he DID do that, and Dan Heng saying the guards protected them and showing he, Caelus and Hanya surrounding by mech. Like...that's not what happened. Or it's not clear enough.

Poor Dan Heng finding new stuff out about his past because Lingsha held a huge grudge against Jing Yuan without knowing the truth about her mentor. At least she's quick to own up. But I want to know more about how the mentor did something to Dan Heng's cocoon to try to make him keep his memories after rebirth. I'm surprised her mentor didn't tell her the truth before she went to the Luofu.

So Feixiao was a slave to the borisin? Geeeze. But she got away and used what she learned against them. Are foxians who grow up with borisin immune to lupitoxin or something?
